A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens (December 8-17, 2004)

A Christmas Carol is a classic. I knew the story and had seen so many versions of it on television, but I’d never read the book before. I finished it last week, and I just loved the descriptions of the ghost, most especially the Ghost of Christmas Past. I don't remember seeing the Ghost’s face changing and merging the faces of the faces in Scroge's past in any of the movie versions. I thought that was spectacular sounding. Scrooge's fear was so natural in the setting and the apprehensive quality of "what's going to happen next??" kept me reading so fast even though I already knew. It was a lot of fun to read.

In seeing Scrooge’s past along with him, the reader and Scrooge could see the accumulation of choices he made to result in his "Bah Humbug!" persona. It makes Scrooge a multi-dimensional character. His change is such a good example of what the spirit(s) of Christmas can inspire.
