The Girl Most Likely by Rebecca Sparrow (July 19-22, 2005)

Lately, I have been trying to add more modern authors to my mix of books. I have tried reading some “chicklit,” and for the most part, I leave the book with a feeling of irritation and worry. I think to myself “Certainly, there must be women today who can write well, and write well about women, aren’t there?” I spotted The Girl Most Likely on a weekend visit to the library. I knew nothing of the book or the author, Rebecca Sparrow. The Fruit Loops on the spine caught my eye, and I decided to give chicklit another go. Luckily, this spontaneous decision led me to check out a charming novel.

Rachel Hill has returned to her childhood home at the age of 27. She’s soon to be divorced, but has only confessed her mistake of a marriage to her friend Zoe. Her parents and sister are still in the dark, and her divorce papers are left sitting in the fridge with a jar of Miracle Whip. As Rachel reflects upon all the things she excelled at when she was 17, and where she thought she’s be by 28, she wonders what her younger self would think of where she’s ended up. She finds a list of things she wanted to have done or do by 28, including learning a movie theme song, which she begins to practice incessantly. Slowly, she begins moving in circles wider than her parents’ yard and accepts herself for herself again.
