Broadcast by the Canadian Broadcasting Company's "CBC Folio" on
March 4, 1056, the first "Anne
of Green Gables" musical
aired as a 90-minute, black and white program.
The musical was based upon L. M. Montgomery's Anne of
Green Gables and was directed by Donald Harron, a Canadian
comedian, actor, director, journalist, author and composer. It written by
James Costigan
and Harron
and starred Toby Tarnow as Anne Shirley. Two years later, a second CBC-TV
production aired on November 18, 1958 and starred Kathy Willard. The 1956
television production was the basis for the long-running Anne
Of Green Gables - The Musical, performed
every summer since 1965 at the Charlottetown Festival on P.E.I., Canada — the
longest-running stage musical in Canada.
