Anne of Green Gables, 1985 Miniseries

"Anne of Green Gables" is a four-hour television miniseries that was first aired by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation in 1985. Sullivan Entertainment loyally adapted L. M. Montgomery's novel. Directed by Kevin Sullivan, the brilliant cast starred Megan Follows as Anne Shirley, Colleen Dewhurst and Richard Farnsworth as siblings Marilla and Matthew Cuthbert, Jonathan Crombie as Anne's rival Gilbert Blythe and Schuyler Grant as Anne's bosom friend Diana Barry. The music, composed by Hagood Hardy, is distinctive and memorable. Filmed in both Southern Ontario and on Prince Edward Island, the beauty of the Canadian scenery is candy for the eyes.

In spite of concerns over the adaptation of this classic Canadian novel by Montgomery's fans, the movie was widely and highly acclaimed upon its airing for its script, cast and loyalty to the original novel's character.

Just one instance of this acclaim was published in The Toronto Star:
"Cult phenomenon. Cultural ambassador. Canadian heroine."

The miniseries earned countless awards including 9 Geminis (best dramatic miniseries, best photography, best writing, best costume design, best music composition, best production design and acting awards for Follows, Dewhurst and Farnsworth), an Emmy for Best Children's Movie of 1986 and a George Peabody Award for Outstanding Contribution to Broadcasting. Today the movie has been broadcast in 150 countries around the world and has legions of devoted fans.

Personal Comments:
What can I say about this miniseries? There is no other movie that has touched me so deeply. I remember watching it's first airing, and watching it year after year when it was shown again on television. There is something indescribable about it that touches my heart.
