LMM and Anne of Green Gables Travel Guide

I visited P.E.I. in the summer of 2006 for my honeymoon. Here is a list of the Anne, L.M. Montgomery and P.E.I. sites and events I enjoyed.

Lucy Maud Montgomery Heritage Museum
Location: 4605 Route 20, Park Corner (Blue Heron Drive)
This museum was my favorite L.M. Montgomery site. It features a personal guided tour of L.M. Montgomery's grandfather's (Senator Donald Montgomery) home by Montgomery's cousin, Robert Montgomery. The home remains a lived-in Montgomery family home. Unlike many other sites, the home includes its original furnishings, not replicas or collected memorabilia. Special sites include Magog (the china dog) the rosebud spray tea-set, autographed first editions. You can create your own "Anne" memorabilia if you attend Anne's Perfectly Scrumptious Wild-Rose Tea-Party. Walk down L.M. Montgomery's Alpine Path to the Lake of Shining Waters. This home inspired Anne and Gilbert's "Ingleside" and "House of Dreams."

Green Gables
Location: Off Route 6, west of Route 13. Parks Canada, Cavendish
Green Gables is a National Historic Site, located in the Prince Edward Island National Park. The farm was the home of David Jr. and Margaret Macneill, who were cousins of L. M. Montgomery's grandfather, and inspired the setting for Lucy Maud Montgomery's Anne of Green Gables. Along with the original house, you can walk down wonderful trails (Lover's Lane and the Haunted Woods) and drink some raspberry cordial. Take a Virtual tour of Green Gables.

Anne and Gilbert, the Musical
Location: Harbourfront Jubilee Theatre, Summerside.
Anne and Gilbert is the story of the tumultuous romance between Anne Shirley and Gilbert Blythe. Twenty-eight beautiful songs, rousing dance numbers, and a moving story will have you on your feet.

Anne of Green Gables - the Musical
Location: Confederation Centre of the Arts, Charlottetown.
Canada's longest running family musical. This famous show plays each summer

L.M. Montgomery Birthplace
Location: Intersection of Routes 6 and 20, New London.
L. M. Montgomery was born here in 1874, when New London was called Clifton. The home has been fitted with non-original Victorian period pieces and overlooks the New London Harbour. Special exhibits include a replica of L.M. Montgomery's wedding dress and personal scrapbooks containing copies of her stories and poems.

Lower Bedeque Schoolhouse
L.M. Montgomery taught school in Lower Bedeque from 1897-1898. The restored one-room schoolhouse is full of books and written materials. During the time, she boarded with the Leard family and fell in love with the Leards' son Herman.

The Bideford Parsonage

Location: 784 Bideford Rd. on Route 166. (North Cape Coastal Drive)
The Bideford local community restored the parsonage and opened it as a museum. Montgomery lived here in the late 1800s. The museum is now filled with information on the culture and lifestyle of the era.

Anne of Green Gables Museum
Location: Route 20, off Route 6, Park Corner.
The old Campbell Homestead, now called Silver Bush, was a favorite place for L.M. Montgomery to visit, and she was married to the Reverend Ewen Macdonald in the parlor. The farm is near the Lake of Shining Waters.

Cavendish Cemetery
Location: the southeast corner of Routes 6 and 13, Cavendish.
Near the Green Gables House, this cemetery is the final resting place of L.M. Montgomery, her husband (Ewen Macdonald), her mother (Clara MacNeill Montgomery) and her grandparents (Alexander and Lucy Woolner Macneill).

The Green Gables Post Office, the Site of L.M. Montgomery's Cavendish Home and the Cavendish United Church
Location: Route 6, East of Route 13, Cavendish
Unfortunately, all that is left of Maud's Cavendish home, where she lived with her grandparents, Alexander and Lucy Woolner Macneill from 1876-1911, is a hole in the ground and the stone cellar. Nothing else remains or was preserved of the homestead structure. The Green Gables Post Office is a short walk away, and this building resembles the original Macneill homestead. Growing up, Montgomery helped her grandparents run the post office from the kitchen of the homestead. There is much to see at the Green Gables Post Office, including exhibits on how L.M. Montgomery submitted her manuscripts in secret. The Cavendish United Church was the Presbyterian Church in Montgomery's day. She met her husband there, since Ewen was minister of the church from 1903-1906.

The University of Price Edward Island
L.M. Montgomery attended school at the Prince of Wales College, which was amalgamated with St. Dunstan's University to form the University of Price Edward Island in 1969. The former Prince of Wales College is now the main building of Holland College. The University of Prince Edward Island is home of the L.M. Montgomery Institute. The librarian at the University of P.E.I. was very kind and helpful.

Other Fun Places to Visit:

Greenwich
Location: In Prince Edward Island National Park.
Hike along trails where the landscape varies from wooded areas to open abandoned agricultural fields and spectacular vistas over Bowley Pond. There are beautiful parabolic sand dune formations that are a spectacular site.

Other L.M. Montgomery and Anne-related Sites:

The Bright River Station and Tea Room
Location: Route 2, Hunter River
The old Hunter River station was the model for the Bright River Station in Anne of Green Gables.

New London Harbour, Anne's House of Dreams and the Avonlea Schoolhouse
Location: French River
The New London Harbour was L.M. Montgomery's model for the Four Winds Harbour. In French River, you can also visit replicas of Anne's House of Dream's and a reconstruction of the Avonlea Schoolhouse.
