Magic for Marigold is the story of young
Marigold Lesley. It begins as the Lesley clan gathers to celebrate
Old Grandmother's birthday and to name the newest addition to the Lesley
clan, Lorraine Lesley's baby. Though a series of complications and
clan machinations, the baby finally is given a name after four months: Marigold. Marigold's
imaginative adventures and her encounters are followed throughout the book
as she grows from a child.
Personal Comments:
Magic for Marigold is not one of my favorites of Montgomery's books. Most
of her stories are good reads for both children and adults. Magic for
Marigold, I think stands only a satisfactory children's book that doesn't
transfer very well to adulthood. Following
the sound, but somewhat prolonged introduction to the Lesley family, Montgomery
scatters off telling a variety of unconnected stories, much the way Anne of
Windy Poplars was constructed. It isn't very effective and I would
have rather had a focused story. Much foreshadowing occurs in Old Grandmother's
words to Marigold in their final, heartfelt conversation, but the reader never
sees fruition the predictions and advice. The addition of a potential romantic
suitor to the end of the story felt as though it were an unnecessary ploy to
bring closure to Marigold's youth and the story itself. The
most intriguing character of the story is Old Grandmother. Unfortunately,
I wished the story was about her rather than Marigold.
