L. M. Montgomery has inspired offshoots of her work, including a film that was inspired by Anne of Green Gables, and stories that imagine Anne's early history.

"Finding Anne" (2009) - This Japanese film was inspired by Anne of Green Gables. "The contemporary tale follows the journey of Anne Lee, a young Japanese girl who visits P.E.I. to find her grandmother's first love, a Canadian soldier. "In 1946, the soldier gave her grandmother a copy of Anne of Green Gables and the book changed her life, it gave her the strength to go on," Gagnon explained. As Lee's quest continues, she discovers why Anne of Green Gables changed her grandmother's life and the lives of many other Japanese women."

Before Green Gables (2008) is a book on the early life of Anne Shirley before her arrival at Green Gables and was written by Budge Wilson. The book was published in February 2008 to commemorate the centennial of L.M. Montgomery's Anne of Green Gables. Penguin publishing and some of Montgomery's descendants have designated the book as an "official prequel."
