"Road to Avonlea" originally
aired by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation in and ran for seven seasons
(1990-1996). The television series was produced by Sullivan Entertainment
who based the plotlines in part on L. M. Montgomery's The
Story Girl, The Golden Road, Chronicles
of Avonlea, and Further Chronicles
of Avonlea. Rather than setting the story in Carlisle as L.
M. Montgomery did, "Road to Avonlea" was set in Avonlea, the home
of the Anne novels and miniseries.
The series began with Sara Stanley being sent to live with her mother's family,
the King family, in Avonlea, P.E.I. after her father is accused of embezzlement. She's
a wealthy girl, used to life in big city Montreal, and she must adjust to move
away from all that's known to her to a small village, with prideful, close-knit
relatives and cousins (Felicity, Felix and Cecily). The series went on
to develop many more beloved characters and storylines.
"Road to Avonlea" was acclaimed, winning 15 Gemini Awards and 3 Emmys. The
show was picked up by American television and called "Avonlea." After
airing 91 episodes, the series ended. A single movie has aired since then
titled "Happy Christmas Miss King" set in 1914.
I believe I watched much of the first seasons or two when they originally
aired, but I never saw the bulk of the episodes because I moved and no
longer had "Road
to Avonlea" offered. One of the few scenes I remember vividly is depicted
above.
